From the onset of the final, both teams went into the match with high spirits with either being perfectly capable of winning the tournament. Dortmund, having previously won the Champions league once back in 1997 and also coming close in 2013 where they lost to Bayern Munich were motivated to win their second Champions league trophy particularly after an underwhelming finish in the Bundesliga coming 5th with 63 points. This heartbreak was made even more upsetting following the announcement of club legend Marco Reus leaving the club at the end of the season. Having played for the club since 2012 winning the champions league would have been considered the perfect reward for both Reus and the team alike. Nonetheless Dortmund put on a good performance for the fans only conceding late into the second half of the game therefore still highlighting their position as a footballing powerhouse.
As Real Madrid win their 15th Champions League trophy, their focus will shift to the future. With its blend of youthful and experienced talent Real Madrid are always looking to improve their already gifted squad which they recently have following the signing of PSG star Kylian Mbappe. It will be interesting to see what the Frenchman can do to bolster their impressive record of one of the biggest clubs in the world.
