The stadium, originally named Stadio Littoriale, was conceptualised by Giulio Ulisse Arata and was inaugurated in 1927. It holds historical significance as one of the pioneering stadiums to seamlessly incorporate stands into its architectural design, setting a global precedent for future stadium constructions.

Stadio Renato Dall'Ara has played a pivotal role in hosting matches for prestigious football events, including the 1934 World Cup and the 1990 World Cup. Notably, it witnessed the England vs Belgium match in the Round of 16 during the 1990 World Cup, culminating in a 1–0 victory for England with an extra-time goal scored by David Platt in the 119th minute.
