Champions League 2024 - 2025: A New Era Begins – Format Changes, Top Contenders, and Unmissable Moments

Welcome to Europe’s premier club competition, the Champions League, as it returns for its 70th Season, set to captivate audiences worldwide once more. First established in 1955, this prestigious tournament brings together the finest teams in Europe as they clash for the prospect of being crowned Champions of Europe.  Besides this monumental milestone in the history of the tournament, there have also been significant changes made to the format for this year’s edition, further adding to its excitement. To commemorate this iconic event, let's delve into these changes on top of the teams that we believe are most likely to challenge for the trophy this season. From footballing titans such as Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, to newly emerging victors such as Manchester City, the 2024/2025 Champions League promises to be a thrilling ride, with each match having its own stakes and memorable moments to look out for.

With plans being first approved in 2022, the Champions League finally welcomes a new format that replaces the traditional 32 teams taking part with 36 teams playing in a league. Instead of the typical group stage format we know and love where each team will play 6 matches against teams in their groups, they will now play 8 matches, with each being against a different team. Teams are being split into 4 pots based on their rank and every team will have to play against 2 teams in each, giving them the opportunity to test their abilities against a wider range of teams than typically possible. In this league system, each match will give teams the chance to earn points and move their position higher up in the table. Out of the 36 teams that take part, the top 8 will automatically qualify for the round of 16 with the next 16 teams having to take part in the play-offs to secure their place. From this point onwards, the tournament will continue in its typical format. This new format is a great way of giving more teams and footballing federations the ability to take part in tournaments, where perhaps previously they have narrowly missed out. The introduction of these teams will allow them to display their skills on the grand stage and challenge the already established footballing giants. It adds an extra layer of unpredictability and excitement to the tournament, as emerging teams have the opportunity to make their mark and create memorable moments for the crowds to adore.

With these changes in mind, let's now shift our attention towards the teams we believe are most likely to challenge for the trophy this season. After securing their 15th Champions League title last season, Real Madrid remain confident they can successfully defend the trophy and push for another. With an already star-studded line-up made up of the biggest names in football, this is a highly plausible goal. From Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and many more, Ancelotti has made great strides in improving the Real Madrid squad even bringing in more recent signings such as France’s own Kyllian Mbappé. With Mbappé never winning the highly coveted Champions League trophy, will Real Madrid be just the ticket he needs to secure his first? Real Madrid ambitions are optimistic and seen as likely by bookmakers, who give them odds of 3/1 to secure their 16th title. Manchester city, however, could put an end to Madrid’s ambitions also being eager to win the title for themselves. In the 2022/2023 season, City secured their first ever Champions League after beating Inter Milan in the final, this was a monumental achievement for a club and a sign of how far they had come as a team over the decade. Whilst missing out last season after being knocked out in the quarter-finals by Real Madrid on penalties, they are once again being given the opportunity to take revenge and clench the title from the Spanish giants. With big names such as Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and more making up their roster as well as Pep Guardiola as their manager, Manchester City will be a serious threat for any team who dares to face them. Bookmakers give City odds of 9/4 to push for their 2nd Champions League trophy, this high appraisal demonstrates City’s position as one of the world's best. Other potential competitors include Arsenal and Bayern Munich, who are given odds of 9/1 and 12/1. Both teams will be eager to take revenge where both failed to have the impact they desired last season. Arsenal lost out on the Premier League title to Manchester City whilst Bayer Leverkusen stole the Bundesliga trophy from Bayern Munich, breaking their 11 title streak. On top of this, Bayern Munich were knocked out of Last year’s Champions League by Real Madrid in the semi-finals when they were so close to victory. Whilst these losses are only temporary, they will serve as motivation for both to push for the title once more. Whilst these are only some of the teams that we believe stand a chance of taking the trophy home with them, this is the tip of the iceberg, with countless other clubs ready to make their mark. The Champions League is renowned for its underdog performances highlighting the unpredictable nature of football and showcasing that until the winner is confirmed, all 36 teams still have a chance of victory.

With the start date drawing closer, fans can expect nothing less than thrilling encounters, dramatic upsets, and many more unforgettable moments. With the introduction of a new format and the addition of new teams, this year's rendition promises to be the most exciting yet!
