New Transfers, Managerial Changes, and Teams to Watch in Italy's Serie A
Serie A, Italy’s premier footballing division, returns for its 123rd season. Expect thrilling action, last-minute goals, and fan upsets as teams vie for glory and the Scudetto. From attacking aces such as Victor Osimhen, Lautaro Martinez, and Paulo Dybala, to defensive maestros such as Theo Hernandez, there is plenty of talent in store for fans to watch. With the start of the 2024/2025 season bringing even more quality players and managerial talents to the league, it is important we acknowledge all these changes which make the start of the upcoming season so exciting. Following the start of the transfer window and the recently concluded Euros tournament, clubs have made many signings in an attempt to bolster their squads to compete for the highly desired title of champions of Italy. Let's talk about some of the most significant ones. Juventus have signed Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa in a deal valued at 51.5 million Euros. Douglas Luiz had a spectacular season as a midfielder scoring, providing 14 goal contributions. He also excelled in other areas, completing the most carries into the final third and midfielder passes into the final third for Aston Villa. With these stats, it will be exciting to see what he brings to the Turin club.
Besides the signing of players, many clubs have undergone managerial changes to start off the 2024/2025 season. Napoli have replaced Francesco Calzona with Antonio Conte. Juventus have replaced their temporary caretaker Paolo Montero with Bologna’s Thiago Motta. AC Milan have switched Stefano Pioli for former Lille manager, Paulo Fonseca. Besides these changes, 11 more Serie A clubs have signed new managers for the new season. With so much new managerial talent coming to Serie A, it will be interesting whether they will be able to keep up with the likes of already established coaches such as Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi, who carried them to a title last season, or Atalanta’s Gian Piero Gasperini, who helped the club secure Champions League qualification last season. The 2024/2025 season promises to be a season like no other. Each manager brings their own unique set of tactics and skill, making each game a clash like no other and certainly not something you want to miss out on.
After the end of the 2023/2024 season, it is also important to acknowledge the teams that have been relegated and promoted for the upcoming season ahead. Frosinone, Sassuolo, and Salernitana have all been relegated to Serie B after finishing in the bottom 3 last season. With the format of relegation not having any play-off matches in Serie A, none of these clubs were given a chance to fight for their place and now must look to reorganise themselves in Italy’s second football division. Taking their place are newly-promoted Parma, Como, and Venezia. Parma and Como finished top of the league and earned automatic qualification to Serie A. Venezia finished 3rd and thus had to compete in the play-offs. Venezia earned their promotion to Serie A by winning the playoff final against Cremonese courtesy of a goal from striker, Cristian Gytkjaer, marking their return after relegation in the 2021-2022 season. Parma returns to Serie A after a 3 year absence giving the club an opportunity to compete with Italy’s elite once more. An even more monumental feat however goes to Como who make their awaited return to the top flight after a 21 year absence. With this being such an outstanding achievement for the club, fans will be eager to see what impact Como can make on the competitive dynamic of Serie A and if they can make their return a more permanent one. Each of these 3 clubs will be bolstering their squads in preparation for the season which awaits them. This will be a challenge no doubt with Serie A being home to many strong teams all desiring to come out victorious. However, with some changes and determination, they might have just what it takes.
With so many teams all perfectly capable of competing for the title, let's take a look at some specific ones which we believe are most likely to bring the trophy home. Inter Milan, who were last year's champions, are likely to win the title once more. After a spectacular season, Inter Milan finished in 1st place an astonishing 19 points ahead of 2nd place Ac Milan undergoing only 2 losses the entire season. An impressive feat for any club no doubt. Under the guidance of Simone Inzaghi and the use of their stacked squad, will Inter Milan clench the title once more? Bookmakers seem to agree, giving them odds of 8/11 of doing so. Other potential competitors for Serie A include Juventus who are given odds of 4/1 to clench the title from Inter Milan. Juventus had a fairly successful season, last season finishing 3rd in Serie A, and more importantly winning the Coppa Italia for the 15th time in the club’s history. This achievement will likely motivate Juventus to push for the title and bring the trophy back to Turin. Ac Milan and Napoli are also being placed as potential competitors being given odds of 6/1 and 8/1. Ac Milan finished 2nd place last season to their historic rivals Inter Milan. Following this loss, they will want to get revenge and rob the title from their neighbours keeping the title in San Siro but this time on the side of the reds. With a new manager and signings, this could be a highly achievable task. Napoli, who were the previous victors of Serie A before Inter Milan underwent an unexpectedly poor performance last season, finishing in 10th place, voiding them of any chance to compete in Europe for the season ahead. With a new manager under the helm it will be interesting to see if he can turn this Naples based club’s fortunes around. Whilst we have only mentioned a small set of teams, it is important to remember that these are just our guesses and any club is perfectly capable of pushing for the title. Only at the end of the season will we know if our predictions are true.
