Founded in 1894 as a section of the sports club of the same name, established in 1884, Le Havre currently competes in Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, after securing promotion from Ligue 2 as winners of the 2022–23 season. The team plays its home matches at the Stade Océane.
Having made its football debut in France's inaugural championship in 1899, Le Havre quickly asserted itself as a force, becoming the first French club outside Paris to win the league on its debut and securing another league victory in 1900. While they have yet to claim the top-tier Ligue 1 title, Le Havre holds the record for winning Ligue 2 six times. The club's highest accolade to date was winning the Coupe de France in 1959.Le Havre engages in two notable rivalries – the "Derby Normand" with SM Caen and a fervently contested clash with Lens, located in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. The club's rich history and recent promotion underscore its resilience and enduring significance in French football.
